Developed countries claim that they are providing $30 billion in short-term finance by the end of 2012. This was promised at the 2009 Copenhagen climate summit and again in Cancun. The goal was to enable developing countries to start reducing their emissions and prepare for climate impacts, but do the numbers add up?

01 Jan, 2011 — BONN 2011 - 06 CREDIBILITY GAP
Rich industrialised countries are getting out of their legal and moral responsibility to cut climate-warming gasses through a lack of commitment and creative accounting, and are unfairly shifting the burden to developing countries.

01 Jan, 2011 — BONN 2011 - 08 INNOVATIVE SOURCES OF CLIMATE FINANCE
The sums needed in the global South – for affected communities to deal with climate change and the transition to a sustainable future – amount to many hundreds of billions of dollars. Rich countries – which have found trillions to bail out banks and investors – say there’s no money for the climate. The facts show that despite their promises, it is political will, not sources of finance, that’s lacking.

01 Jan, 2011 — BONN 2011 - 10 THE KYOTO PROTOCOL
The Kyoto Protocol does not expire in 2012 or ever. Its terms clearly require further commitments for developed countries’ emission cuts. But these countries are now imposing “conditionalities” on agreeing to a second commitment period or, worse, they are proposing to replace it altogether with another weaker agreement. They are risking climate anarchy by dismantling the climate architecture, with nothing better in sight.

01 Jan, 2011 — BONN 2011 - AGENDA FIGHT
At this year’s climate negotiations there have been discussions over the agenda and little else. This is because they have been skewed against developing countries’ and the agreed rules. Fighting for fair and balanced agendas is important for the future of the UN climate system.

02 Dec, 2010 — CLIMATE JUSTICE BRIEF 11: THE UNITED STATES AND CLIMATE NEGOTIATIONS
• The fossil fuel industry and polarized politics killed US domestic climate legislation, and have negatively impacted the United States’ contribution to international climate discussions • The Obama administration has acted unfairly and aggressively in the negotiations to try to extort unreasonable concessions from developing countries • The Obama administration has proposed a “new paradigm” of voluntary pledges - rather than binding, science-based mitigation commitments - that threatens to completely undermine the current climate architecture • The Obama administration must stop pretending it can lead internationally, and must start leading domestically, so the US can fulfill its responsibilities to its own citizens and the world

02 Dec, 2010 — CLIMATE JUSTICE BRIEF 13: GENDER AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Adapting to and mitigating climate change are critical to women’s and men’s enjoyment of economic and social rights. Climate change policy and financing must seek to promote sustainable development as the grounding for gender equality, women’s empowerment and poverty eradication. Global, regional and national climate financing policies and projects must ensure positive synergies between adaptation, mitigation, technology transfer and gender and social equity. Gender analysis, gender perspective and women’s effective participation must be assured at all levels of the climate policy and climate change financing architecture.

02 Dec, 2010 — CLIMATE JUSTICE BRIEF 2: SHARED VISION
The “shared vision for long-term cooperative action” in climate change negotiations should not be reduced to defining the limit on temperature increases and the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, but must also incorporate in a balanced and integral manner measures regarding capacity building, production and consumption patterns, and other essential factors such as the acknowledging of the Rights of Mother Earth to establish harmony with nature.

02 Dec, 2010 — CLIMATE JUSTICE BRIEF 3: ADAPTATION
Relating to the impacts of climate change on developing countries, developed countries must fulfill their commitment to compensate poor countries and communities for the costs of adapting to climate change, and repay their climate debts.

06 Dec, 2010 — CLIMATE JUSTICE BRIEF 4: MITIGATION BY DEVELOPED COUNTRIES
It is necessary that, at the next UN Climate Change Conference in Mexico, the amendment to the Kyoto Protocol be adopted for its second commitment period from 2013 to 2017 in which developed countries must commit to significant domestic GHG emission reductions of at least 50% in reference to 1990 levels.

02 Dec, 2010 — CLIMATE JUSTICE BRIEF 7: THE WORLD BANK AND CLIMATE FINANCE
• The World Bank does not represent the interests of the countries or communities most adversely impacted by climate change • The World Bank’s fossil-fuelheavy lending portfolio puts people and the planet in peril • World Bank financing leads to further indebtedness of countries in the global South • A global climate fund must be established under UN Climate Convention to channel financial reparations for climate debt • The World Bank must have no role in establishing the climate fund or in managing or governing climate finance

02 Dec, 2010 — CLIMATE JUSTICE BRIEF 8: THE DANGER OF CARBON MARKETS
The so-called Clean Development Mechanism has failed miserably • Carbon offsets allows Annex I countries to use an even bigger portion of atmospheric space • Developed countries want to count financial flows from offsets toward their financial obligations to developing countries for mitigation and adaptation. This is a clear case of double counting • The use of offsets must be immediately scrapped • A public fund to support appropriate clean technologies, as well as mitigation and adaptation in developing countries is a better option than carbon markets.

15 Nov, 2011 — FUEL TAX, TRANSPORT AND CLIMATE CHANGE
UK transport policy is heading in the wrong direction. We urgently need action to tackle the dual challenges of climate change and rising oil prices but the Government’s current plans will do nothing to help. The decision by the Government in the March 2011 Budget to subsidise motoring from a tax on North Sea Oil and Gas profits will have significant repercussions for years to come. Fuel prices have continued to rise over recent months, despite the billions of pounds allocated to keeping them down .

18 Oct, 2002 — GM CROPS AND FOOD SECURITY
Many people, not least those who live in countries where hunger persists, believe that a technological fix will at best address the symptoms of hunger and malnutrition, but not the causes. Many fear that corporate control over the food chain through patents and the ownership of seeds may even exacerbate the problem.

24 Oct, 2002 — GM FOOD SAFETY
The safety of GM foods remains in serious doubt. Genetic engineering is a difficult and fairly haphazard procedure, and the use of substantial equivalence in safety testing of the finished product is inadequate to prove that they are safe.

The Government argues in its Heathrow consultation that economic benefits are the main reason for expanding Heathrow airport. It says “Our work shows that a third runway at Heathrow would bring in net economic benefits of around £5 billion", and argues that "in the view of the significant potential economic benefits, there is a strong case for introducing further capacity at Heathrow".

The consultation presents this economic case as a given. However, this economic case is flimsy in the extreme. This briefing presents five main arguments why it should not be accepted.

22 Nov, 2005 — HOW TO...OPPOSE A SUPERMARKET PLANNING APPLICATION
Though the devastating impacts of out-of-town supermarkets on communities and local businesses are well known, more than half of new retail space is still being built out of town and the supermarkets continue to expand at a massive rate. Tesco alone plans to open 111 new stores in 2005/6, and could in the future capture as much as 40 percent of the food retail market. In-town and edge-of-town supermarkets are now also starting to dominate our high streets. But local campaigners are not giving up – in fact all over the country, communities are showing that by building alliances with other local groups, good communications and working with decision-makers in their area, it is possible to oppose and stop bad developments. This briefing will guide you and your local group in opposing supermarket applications in your local area. It provides a step-by-step guide to making your way through the English planning system, leading you to the evidence that will help you win.

Across the country, local councils are drafting new planning documents as required by recent national Government legislation. The new plans – known as Local Development Frameworks (LDFs) – will shape the way communities develop over years to come. Friends of the Earth believes that LDFs have the potential to play a vital role in promoting vibrant, diversified and localised retail development. But this will only happen if Local Authorities bring in policies that support their local economy, rather than encouraging the dominance of multiple retailers, car-based shopping, community destruction and environmental pollution.

Recent tensions in the Middle East have led to fears about the supply of oil, and the knock on effect this will have on both prices at the petrol pump, and on the wider economy. However, it's also an opportunity to review our addiction to oil, and recognise the need to become more fuel efficient and introduce alternative fuels and technologies. This would aid economic stability, bring consumer benefits and, most of all, help the fight against global climate change (burning oil is a major source of climate-changing carbon dioxide).

This briefing takes a look at some current observations of climate change, some of the recent science and how the future may unfold. This is not a comprehensive review, although it certainly dips into the epic work of thousands of scientists that contribute to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (the IPCC)1. It does try to bring together some important facts and forecasts to build a view of a warming world and some of the severe consequences for humanity.
