How can I save the rainforest?6 September 2011
Rainforests have been described as the planet's green lungs. But they're increasingly under threat.
So what can we do to help them?
Rainforests are vital for all species that share the planet with us because they:
- Absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide, a climate-changing gas.
- Support millions of important species.
- Help prevent soil erosion.
Also, 60 million people depend on rainforests for their livelihoods, food, medicine and building materials.
But soy production is clearing large areas of the rainforest to supply European farmers who use it as a high-protein feed for animals in factory farms.
We need to increase planet-friendly farming that doesn't wreck the environment or livelihoods abroad, and boosts a thriving farming sector in the UK.
