What is the environmental impact of Friends of the Earth's head office?4 May 2011
We occupy an old office block built in the 1950s, which does not meet today's standards of energy efficiency.
However, staff efforts to reduce, re-use and recycle are excellent.
Independent Audit
In 2002, Sustainable Energy Action (now known as Carbon Descent) gave us 7/10 in the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).
In 2007 our recycling of paper, glassĀ and plastics saved 13,300 kWh of energy (Paper Round).
Improvements made
Since the SEA Audit, Friends of the Earth has made numerous improvements - saving over 14 tonnes of CO2 each year. These include:
- Installing a new condensing boiler
- Using flat screen computer monitors
- Replacing all fridges with 'A class' models
Thinking ahead
We have now implemented an Environmental Monitoring Program. We've been reporting on our performance since 2008, and displays the results in our head office.
