I'd like to convert my car to liquid petroleum gas. Will this help to reduce its emissions? |
Converting your existing car to run on Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) will have some benefits in terms of reduced emissions, although these will not be huge. Its greatest emissions benefits are to be found in replacing larger, diesel powered vehicles.
If you are considering replacing your existing car, hybrid vehicles (which use a combination of petrol or diesel and electricity), are a better option while we wait the commercial availability of cars powered by biofuels, hydrogen and fuel cells.
Hybrids use electric power at lower speeds which is particularly useful for urban 'stop start' driving. This is because they require no idling of the engine unlike regular vehicles which pollute even while stationary.
Conventional fuel is then used to drive outside urban areas, or where better performance is needed. The battery is recharged by a generator that is powered by the engine. Both Honda and Toyota offer a hybrid car. We have produced a briefing - Cleaner cars and fuels - on the fuels that are currently available on those in development.
