What are you doing to stop British bees disappearing?12 July 2012
Why are our bees disappearing?
Bee numbers Britain have fallen dramatically in recent years. Three bumblebee species are already extinct.
A quarter of British bees are listed in the Red Data Book of threatened species - and none is protected by law.
Many factors are causing their decline - from habitat loss, to disease, to climate change. There's also growing evidence that some pesticides harm bees.
Jam today
Bees are vital for many of our favourite foods - like jam, fruit, tomatoes, coffee. And of course honey. In fact, they:
- Pollinate 75% of our key crops and favourite foods
- Save UK farmers £1.8bn a year in pollinating our produce
- Are important for our parks and wildlife
Plan Bee
We're campaigning for a National Bee Action Plan to ensure that the way we farm our food and plan our towns gets bees back on track.
The Government also need to have the right experts in place to protect our most threatened species.
