What does Friends of the Earth think of trident?

Friends of the Earth does not have a position on nuclear weapons but we would like to use this debate to raise the issue of climate change.

If approved, the Government's decision to replace Trident will generate manufacturing costs of £15 to £20 billion. Taking into account running costs over the next 30 years this could escalate to £76 billion.

Climate change is a greater threat

Climate change is a greater security risk than nuclear war. Global warming emissions must come down within 10 years if we are to avert catastrophic climate change.

The Stern Report says at least 1% of GDP must be spent every year on addressing this threat. The cost of not taking action could lead to the loss of up to 20% of GDP.
