Immigration and cities
7 August 2013

We're net beneficiaries of the experience, skills and culture that migrants bring to our cities says Caroline Knowles - Professor of Sociology at Goldsmiths University.

Sharing is taking off in cities around the world. People are sharing things like cars, land for urban farming, and public spaces. Sharing is essential for well-being and the environment.

But to increase sharing we'll need to tackle exclusion and isolation in our societies.

Arriving in a new city can be exciting or terrifying. A lot depends on why you migrated in the first place. But your surroundings and the people you interact with also influence your experience.

In this interview for Big Ideas Change The World, professor Knowles explores the impacts of an unfriendly welcome to a new city. And she reveals the benefits - to us all - of improving participation.
