Plans for incinerator successfully challenged

image

When a new incinerator was proposed in Hull, local residents came together to oppose plans and formed the campaign group Hull and Holderness Opposing The Incinerator (HOTI).

Friends of the Earth's Legal Team acted for HOTI in a successful legal challenge to the pollution permit, granted for the incinerator by the Environment Agency.

The group claimed the permit had been granted incorrectly, because the Agency had not considered the climate change impact of carbon emissions from the incinerator. The claim was successful and the Agency agreed to revoke the permit.

This means that the company aiming to operate the incinerator, Waste Recycling Group, will have to make a new application for a pollution permit. Local communities will now have the chance to get involved in the process for a second time, including the discussions on the climate change impact of the incinerator.
