Latest on the Planning Bill

The proposed Planning Bill has finished its first readings in Parliament and is now being debated in the House of Lords.

Our amendments to include climate change in the Bill caused a strong Labour back bench rebellion and were rejected by only 15 votes. The Bill was finally pushed through leaving communities with no meaningful right to influence decisions.

The Bill returns to the Commons in the Autumn, when lobbying MPs will be the final chance to get these amendments passed. If you or your local group can help us lobby your MP in October please contact Jenny on 020 7566 1723 or jenny.lopez@foe.co.uk for an Action Guide or just to find out more information.

We'll be in touch again soon with more news about the campaign and how you can help.

Heathrow expansion challenged

The Government has been forced to delay their decision on expanding Heathrow Airport following a legal challenge from Friends of the Earth.

We argued that they'd failed to consider the impact of expansion on ethnic minority communities. There will now have to be a full investigation.

Car ads must show climate impact

Threat of legal action from Friends of the Earth has forced the Government to change advertising guidelines for cars. Billboard adverts must now show the vehicle's carbon dioxide emissions.

New White Paper at odds with Planning Bill

The Government has launched a new white paper on empowering communities. However, we argue this is strongly contradicted by the new Planning Bill proposals.

Public want a say on planning decisions

A new survey supports our Planning Bill campaign, showing that 9 out of 10 people want to have a say on big planning decisions, and that 94% of the public want climate change to be taken into account.

Power Up 2008 inspires community groups

This year's Power Up was another great success. Bringing together people from all over the country, the weekend used training and workshops to show communities how legal and planning knowledge can be used to strengthen local campaigns.
