Europe won't swallow GM wheat. GM bread: More dough for Monsanto
15 January 2001
European consumers are highly unlikely to buy GM bread Friends of the Earth said today after it was reported that biotech giant Monsanto was trialing GM wheat in the U.S.
Pete Riley, senior GM campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
"GM wheat is all about making more dough for Monsanto whilst the public and environment take the risks. Herbicide resistant wheat and other cereals will mean even fewer weeds in arable fields - this will be a disaster for the wildlife that depend on them for food and shelter.
Any farmers considering growing GM wheat should use their loaves and think again. European consumers have made it perfectly clear that they don't want GM food. They won't buy GM bread either.
