Government breaks green pledge for home-sellers pack
16 January 2001
Friends of the Earth today condemned the Government for failing to ensure the inclusion of key green measures in the planned new 'home sellers packs', intended to help speed up property sales.
FOE wanted the Government to back amendments requiring:
- future sellers packs to include energy saving advice;
- interim measure that would provide energy saving information to millions of people buying homes before the sellers packs come into force.
Today the Government opposed both changes despite having backed an almost identical bill for the last three years.
Martyn Williams, Parliamentary Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
The Government said that the home-sellers pack would tell buyers how they can make their new home more energy efficient. The wording of the Homes Bill fails to guarantee that this will happen. We are astonished and dismayed that the Government has back-tracked on this pledge by refusing to ensure that this new law includes this commitment. The Government has missed a wonderful opportunity to help people reduce their fuel bills and tackle global climate change at the same time.
