Gm crops still a risk

7 February 2001

Responding to an article “transgenic crops in natural habitats” published in Nature today,Adrian Bebb, Food Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:

"Friends of the Earth welcomes these findings. They add to our knowledge on the survival of crops in the wild. However, the research provides no guarantee that GM super-weeds will not establish themselves in the wider environment. This risk will increase significantly if the Government succeeds with its plans to conduct GM trials at over 90 sites throughout the UK.

Organic and conventional crops and honey are also at risk from GM pollution. If the biotech industry cannot guarantee that their crops will not contaminate conventional crops and food they shouldn't be allowed to gamble with our countryside.”
