Sactra report must lead to cuts in road-building

9 February 1998

He must transfer funds to the traffic reduction measures that his advisors say will “at the same time improve economic efficiency”.

Roger Higman, Senior Transport Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:

“Mr Prescott's advisors say that road-building may cost jobs but that traffic reduction will improve economic efficiency. The implications of this advice are clear and must be followed. He must cut spending on roads and increase funds for traffic reduction and public transport.”

Following his appointment, Mr Prescott launched a review of the National Roads Programme. The results of the review are expected to be published in July.
