Foe group condemns monster millennium dome car park

12 February 1998

The 1,400 place Dome car park is planned by the New Millennium Experience Company for Falconwood Field in Greenwich. The site is designated as Metropolitan Open Land, and is next to Oxleas Wood, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It will be one of five “park and ride” or “park and sail” centres for the Dome, offering 8,400 car parking spaces in all. Local campaigners say that the car park will “ruin” the character of the area. Greenwich and Lewisham FOE is demanding that Dome car parks are built on empty brownfield sites only. The group also wants a change in the planned parking split between Inner and Outer London. Currently only 1,600 places are planned for Outer London. Greenwich Council is reported to have delayed a decision on planning permission for the site until after the May local elections.

Commenting, Greenwich and Lewisham FOE campaigner Jenny Bates said today:

“The Government has made a huge fuss about how the Millennium Dome will be a green experience for the 21st century. That claim is undermined by the ridiculous choice of Falconwood Field for a massive car park. It will ruin the precious character of the area. Peter Mandelson must make sure that these plans are changed at once.We don't want the next millennium to begin with Falconwood Field becoming another victim of the Great Car Economy.”
