Quarrying company told to stop extracting limestone in national park

13 February 1998

RMC Roadstone already has permission to quarry fluorspar at Longstone Edge. However, it had also been extracting limestone - in breach of its planning permission. The quantity of limestone that RMC roadstone wanted to extract would have gouged out a massive crater larger than the nearest town, Bakewell.

Peter Thompson, Chairman of the Save Longstone Edge group said

“We applaud the decision by the Park Authority in stopping the expansion of this massively destructive quarry. Its decision means that even if the company appeals, they are prevented from further damaging the landscape during the lengthy appeals procedure.

We call on RMC to stop thinking about any further desecration of this beautiful part of the Peak National Park, They have now lost all the arguments -environmental, legal and public opinion. They should accept the decision gracefully and pull out from Longstone Edge”

Elaine Gilligan, Quarrying Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said
“Friends of the Earth welcomes today's decision by the Peak Park Authority. However, the Government must change the law to allow the old minerals permissions in environmentally important areas to be revoked without local authorities having to pay huge sums in compensation.”
