Foe backs livingstone over congestion-charging
25 February 2002
Friends of the Earth today renewed its backing for congestion charging in London. Mayor of London Ken Livingstone is expected to give the go-ahead to the traffic reduction measure tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. The environmental pressure group also slammed the Conservative party for urging the Government to block Mayor Livingstone's plans.
Paul de Zylva, London Campaigns Co-ordinator for Friends of the Earth, said:
Traffic congestion in London is appalling. It's bad for business, bad for the environment and bad for health. Radical action is needed before the capital faces permanent gridlock. Mr Livingstone's plans are an important step in tackling the problem and must be given time to work.
However, congestion charging alone is not enough. The public must have a cost-effective and viable alternative to the car. London's public transport system must improve, and must improve quickly.
Yet again we are seeing a knee-jerk reaction from the Conservatives against moves to improve our transport system. Their narrow-minded attempt to curry favour with the roads lobby will keep us all on the road to gridlock.
Congestion charging alone won't solve London's transport problems. Friends of the Earth is calling on the Mayor to give people real incentives to use other ways of getting about. This includes travel discounts, company travel plans and safe routes to school. These would help people to change their travel habits without feeling that they are the only ones taking action.
