Government advice on GM crops blown away by new pollen report
2 March 1999
Commenting on a new report, commissioned by the Soil Association, on the distance that pollen from GM crops can travel, Pete Riley, Senior Food Camapigner said:
This new report highlights once again the appalling advice that the Government has received on GM crops. It is clear that maize pollen travels a lot further than the Government admits, threatening the future of farmers who wish to grow GM-free crops - particularly those in the organic industry. These findings reinforce the need for the Government to put the environment and farmers' livelihoods at least on a par with the commercial interests of the big biotech firms. They should calla five year freeze on GM crops now.
