Fare figures show urgent need for tax changes to promote public transport and reduce road traffic

3 March 1998

“The figures show the true legacy of decades of transport policy catering overwhelmingly for car drivers at the expense of those who use public transport.It's high time the tide was turned. Gordon Brown must increase the cost of motoring in his Budget, and plough the money into better buses and trains in order to reduce road traffic. And John Prescott must take this further in the transport White Paper later this year”.

FOE is calling on the Chancellor to:

  • raise road fuel escalator to 9 per cent;

  • vary Vehicle Excise Duty to penalise gas-guzzling cars and encourage fuel efficient vehicles;

  • Cut company car perks;

  • Tax private non-residential parking;

  • substantially cut the roads programme.

FOE wants a substantial proportion of the revenue raised by these measures to be spent on a modern, efficient, affordable and reliable public transport system, and better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.
