Shoppers flock to gm-free iceland
23 March 1999
Friends of the Earth today expressed its delight at the increased profits announced by frozen foods retailer Iceland. The company was the first to remove all GM ingredients from its own-label foods last year. Iceland's Managing Director Malcolm Walker has said that part of the company's profits growth was a result of its GM policy.
Adrian Bebb, food campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
We are absolutely delighted that Iceland is benefitting from it's stance on GM food. Iceland was the first store to give customers what they want, now the company is reaping the rewards. These figures should be closely scrutinised by Tesco's and the big food manufacturers who continue to force feed the public with GM food.
