Government Failing on Carbon Emissions

28 March 2002

Friends of the Earth demanded that the Government take urgent action to tackle carbon emissions, following the publication today of the latest provisional carbon emission estimates, showing an increase for the second successive year [1].

Roger Higman, Climate Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
This shows that the Government has not got carbon dioxide emissions under control. The Government is supposed to be committed to a 20 per cent cut in CO2 emissions by 2010, yet we are seeing an increase.

Friends of the Earth believes the Government must urgently review its climate programme and take new steps to promote the development of renewable energy, as well as acting to cut traffic growth, for example by putting a penny on the price of petrol in the coming budget.

The Government has been touting itself as a world leader on climate change action -if Tony Blair wants to maintain this position at the Earth Summit in Johannesburg, Government must act to tackle these rising emissions now.”
