Foe welcomes local mp's help - over road traffic reduction bill

Christopher Chope, the Conservative Transport Spokesman, co-operated with the sponsors of the Bill by withdrawing a number of amendments after hearing the Minister's responses.He also kept his comments concise - crucial to the success of the Bill as it had less than one hour's Parliamentary time.
The Road Traffic Reduction Bill seeks to “reduce the adverse environmental, social and economic impacts of road traffic”. If passed, the Government will be required to report to Parliament on the setting of targets for road traffic reduction. The Bill, drawn up by Friends of the Earth, Plaid Cymru and the Green Party, was sponsored by Cynog Dafis MP (Plaid Cymru). It has all-party support and an excellent chance of becoming law.
Commenting, FOE Parliamentary Campaigner Ron Bailey said today:
“We have crossed swords with Mr Chope during earlier stages of this Bill. But we would like to thank him for being so constructive in last Friday's Report Stage. We are delighted that the Bill can now move on. The final stage in the House of Commons will be on April 24th, and we hope Mr Chope will be as constructive on that occasion as well. The Bill is vital to cut traffic and the pollution, noise and danger it causes. We urge all MPs to ensure that it becomes law as soon as possible.”
