Friends of the Earth Responds to Select Committee Report on Coal
Anna Stanford, Energy Campaigner of Friends of the Earth said:
It is wrong to think that a green future for electricity generation in the UK must mean throwing coalfield communities on the scrap heap. There is a place for coal in the medium term if the Government acts to end unfair competition, and favour deep-mined coal over opencast for environmental reasons. The Select Committee is wrong to oppose tighter controls on acid rain emissions. In the long-run the future for Britain, and for coalfield communities, lies in creating new jobs by investment in renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. The Government has yet to recognise fully the huge economic and social potential that renewable energy could offer.
