Foe hits back at cbi over green taxes criticisms

12 April 2002

Friends of the Earth today criticised the CBI for attacking the Government over the introduction of a number of green taxes.

The CBI complains that “green taxes cost business £14 billion a year” but neglect to mention that almost all the revenue raised has been used to cut companies' national insurance contributions. In effect pollution and environmental destruction are being taxed rather than jobs.

Dr Tim Jenkins, green taxation expert, at Friends of the Earth, said
“The CBI is whinging on about green taxes because it doesn't like any sort of taxation on business. In fact the environmental taxes introduced by the Government have been generally successful. We hope the Chancellor will expand their scope and effectiveness in the Budget next week. Instead of looking backwards, the CBI should be helping its members to reduce their green tax bill by helping them to seize the numerous opportunities that exist for reducing their energy-use, pollution and environmental impact.”
