Labour pledges: nothing on environment (again)

BLAIR TO GREEN VOTERS: GET LOST!
Friends of the Earth today slammed New Labour for failing to include any promises about the environment in its set of five priority pledges in the second term. Prime Minister Tony Blair also failed to mention the environment at all during his “hopeful, humble” speech announcing the start of the General Election campaign. Green groups have persistently criticised Mr Blair for failing to meet his promise before the last Election to “put the environment at the heart of Government”.
FOE Executive Director Charles Secrett commented:
“At the last Election, Tony Blair promised to put the environment at the heart of Government. He didn't. Now he is failing to put it anywhere near the centre of this Election campaign. There are many green pledges Labour could have chosen to show that they take these issues seriously. For example, what about a promise finally to recreate a decent public railway?
Labour seems to be taking the millions of voters who care about the environment for granted. If Labour doesn't make the environment a priority when deciding on its Election promises, why should green-minded electors make Labour a priority when deciding how to cast their votes?”
