Last Chance to get Transport on Tracks?
10 May 2000
Backbench Labour MPs have a last chance today to get the Government to fulfil its electoral promise to reduce then reverse traffic growth, by voting for clear traffic reduction targets in today's debate on the Transport Bill.
An amendment by Simon Thomas MP (Plaid Cymru), with the backing of the Liberal Democrats, would require the Government to set year-by-year targets to cut traffic levels nationally by 10% by 2010.
Government Ministers have previously ruled out setting year-by-year targets for overall traffic levels despite a recommendation from their Commission for Integrated Transport that they should do so. Almost 300 Labour MPs have signed early day motions calling for traffic reduction targets to be set.
Martyn Williams, Parliamentary Campaigner for Friends of the Earth said:
Before the Election, the Government promised to reduce then reverse traffic growth but now it says traffic will rise by almost a fifth over the next decade. We are calling on Labour MPs to keep their promises to vote for traffic reduction and end the chaos and pollution on Britain's roads.
NOTE TO EDITORS:
A six-page briefing explaining how Labour's transport policy has gone wrong and why traffic reduction targets are needed is available from Friends of the Earth.
