Domestic Trouble for Clinton at G-8 Summit: U.S. Environmental Leader Criticizes President for Inaction on Global Warming

Clapp will join representatives from FOE and WWF in talking to reporters Thursday morning in the Grand Committee Room at the House of Commons, before and after a 10:15 briefing by GLOBE UK. Clapp will also be available for reporters in London and Birmingham during the G-8 Summit.
Mr. Clapp released this statement on arrival in London:
"Follow-through on the climate accord is one of the most contentious issues on the G-8 agenda. Sharp prodding of President Clinton by European leaders at last year's summit in Denver set the stage for the landmark climate deal in Kyoto. Now Mr.Clinton comes to Birmingham as the only G-8 leader who hasn't signed it.
"In fact, Mr. Clinton is charting a course that could undo the climate treaty altogether. His plan for unrestricted free trade in pollution credits is a way to avoid addressing the real commitments made by the U.S. last December in Kyoto, Japan.
"If the Clinton-Gore pollution trading plan is accepted without revision, it will turn the Kyoto Protocol into just one more media event. European leaders have signalled that they will oppose it, calling instead for all industrialized national to achieve at least 50 percent of their reductions domestically, which we support as a minimum."
