Politicians must stop ignoring green issues

23 May 2001

New Poll Shows Public Concern on the Environment
Friends of the Earth today called on politicians to give more attention to green issues after a new survey revealed enormous public concern on the environment.

The Reader's Digest Survey, conducted by MORI and published today showed that:

  • 72 % disagreed with the statement 'global warming is all a lot of hot air', and

  • 69 % agreed that 'pollution and environmental damage affect them in every day life'

Charles Secrett, Director of Friends of the Earth, said:

“This survey shows that green issues are important to most of the electorate. But so far both Labour and the Conservatives have ignored environmental concerns. It's about time our political leaders gave these vital issues the prominence they deserve.”

Last week a MORI poll for the Stop Esso Campaign showed that 53 % of petrol buyers would boycott Esso because of the company's attempts to block action on global warming. For more information see www.stopesso.com
