No label on GM tesco pizza - claim
3 June 1999
The BBC has reported that a cheese and tomato pizza bought in a Tesco store has been found to contain GM soya but did not carry a label identifying the ingredient. Commenting,Adrian Bebb, Food Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
Supermarkets are required by law to notify the public if a food item contains any DNA from GM soya or maize. If Tesco has been selling pizzas containing GM soya without an appropriate label - however small the amount - they have been breaking the law.
The current GM labelling laws enjoy little public confidence as they are riddled with exemptions. Claims, if substantiated, that food containing GM ingredients has been sold unlabelled by the UK's largest supermarket will only further undermine that confidence.
It is now clear that very few people other than the Prime Minister want to eat GM food. The Government must act to ensure that people do not eat GM food against their wishes. They can do this by calling a five year freeze on GM food and crops.
