McDonald's removes GMO's

12 June 1999

McDonald's, the UK's largest fast food outlet, is the latest company to respond to consumer concern over GM foods. In a statement the company says that it has already removed GM ingredients [such as soya and maize] and is “working with our suppliers to secure sustainable, non-GM sources” of derivatives such as soya oil and lecithin.

McDonald's announcement is the latest in a long line from companies reacting to public concern over GM food.

. The UK's top supermarkets are all in the process of phasing out GM ingredients and derivatives from their own brand products.

. A FOE survey in March revealed that many restaurants were planning to remove GM ingredients

. A FOE survey last month showed that most of the UK's top food manufacturers were going GM-free

Adrian Bebb, Food Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
“We are delighted that McDonald's is listening to consumer fears, and is removing GM ingredients from its products. Hopefully this means that McDonald's will go completely GM-free. The market for GM food and ingredients has collapsed, no-one appears to want them. The Government must now take steps to help companies to go GM-free rather than promoting a fbiotech industry that most people don't want.”
