Urban taskforce: FOE says act now!
29 June 1999

Welcoming the final report of the Government's Urban Taskforce, Tony Bosworth, Friends of the Earth's Housing Campaigner, said:
Lord Rogers has outlined a radical and exciting vision for making our towns and cities places for people rather than for cars. The Taskforce's recommendations must be implemented as soon as possible, and not subjected to the same 'Carry on Consulting' approach that has bedevilled the Government's transport policy.
Top of the list for speedy implementation are the first rate recommendations for tax changes. These must be strong candidates for implementation in Gordon Brown's next Budget
Friends of the Earth also endorsed the report's recommendations on targets for traffic reduction. Tony Bosworth added:
Cutting traffic levels is essential if people are to be attracted back to live in the centre of town and cities. Setting targets for traffic reduction is essential if real cuts in traffic levels are to be achieved.
