MPs slam government planning reforms

3 July 2002

A Committee of MPs has today slammed Government plans to radically reform the planning system. The MPs said that proposals to replace the current system of public inquiries for Major Infrastructure Projects by a new Parliamentary procedure wouldn’t save time, wouldn’t gain the confidence of the public and wouldn’t be acceptable to MPs. It also said it was concerned about proposals to abandon objectors’ right to be heard at the public hearing.

Commenting Hugh Ellis, Planning Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:

"Government plans to reform the planning system have been a complete shambles from the very start. It’s little wonder that this committee of MPs has been so highly critical. The Government must now abandon their ludicrous proposals, return to the drawing board and ensure that the planning system benefits local communities and their environment and not just the interests of big business."
