Foe slams plans to fast-track new nuclear plants
4 July 2002
The Government is considering proposals to speed up the building of new nuclear power stations by allowing designs that have been given safety approval in the US, fast-track clearance for building in the UK according to leaked DTI documents obtained by New Scientist.
Roger Higman, Nuclear Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
"Britain does not need any new nuclear stations. We need clean, safe and renewable energy instead. The fact that ministers are even considering allowing new nuclear power stations to be built in the UK without subjecting them to our own safety procedures is highly irresponsible and deeply disturbing. Nuclear power is very unpopular with the British public, and todays revelations that UK safety measures may be skipped simply to allow new power plants to be built more quickly will only fuel their concern. Its about time the British Government woke up to the fact that the nuclear dream is over.
