Foe slams return of flawed mox fuel

Friends of the Earth today slammed the decision to return a shipment of flawed plutonium fuel from Japan to the UK.
Mark Johnston, nuclear campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said:
“We are completely opposed to this flawed shipment of MOX fuel being returned to the UK. The environmental and security risk of transporting plutonium around the globe are unacceptably high. Today's decision shows that the UK Government and BNFL are intent on clinging on to the fragile plutonium economy regardless of the risks.”
Friends of the Earth also hit out at speculation that nuclear reprocessing may shortly be given the go-ahead at a new MOX plant at Sellafield.
Mark Johnston continued:
“Allowing the new MOX plant at Sellafield to start production would be economic and environmental madness. It's about time BNFL abandoned reprocessing and turned its attention to becoming world leaders on nuclear clean-up instead. Future generations will not thank us for leaving them to deal with a costly and dangerous nuclear legacy that is likely to last for thousands of years.”
