Government Fails to Stem Traffic Growth

9 August 2001

Commenting on the Government's traffic figures announced today, Tony Bosworth, Transport Campaigner at Friends of the Earth commented:

"John Prescott pledged in 1997 that there would less traffic on the road within five years. It now looks certain that there will in fact be more. More traffic means more congestion, more pollution, more accidents - and more broken promises".

"Building new roads is not the answer - it's like trying to heal a huge wound with more and more plasters. If the Government is serious about tackling traffic, it has to spend less on building roads and more on giving drivers good quality alternatives to the car".
