FOE Welcomes Think @bout London
14 September 2001
Friends of the Earth enthusiastically welcomed the launch today of Ford's 'Th!nk @bout London' initiative, which will introduce a fleet of battery-powered Th!nk electric cars to London for the first time.
Friends of the Earth is particularly pleased to see:
- the use of renewably-generated electricity to power the cars, which means they will be zero emission at source and at the point the electricity is generated;
- the use of at least one of the cars as part of a 'car pooling' experiment;
- Ford's keenness to involve environmental groups in the project's design;
- Ford's intention to carry out a wider study of sustainable urban mobility.
Roger Higman, Senior Climate and Transport Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
Traffic is the major cause of air pollution in London and a significant contributor to global climate change. While London obviously needs better buses and trains, Th!nk@bout London shows how leading motor manufacturers can contribute by introducing cleaner, more efficient vehicles. Friends of the Earth congratulates Ford on this initiative,which we hope will be a blueprint for similar schemes throughout the UK and Europe.
