Don't destroy rainham marshes says Government's wildlife advisors

Friends of the Earth has welcomed today's statement from English Nature, the Government's official wildlife advisors, objecting to plans that would destroy Rainham Marshes, one of London's top wildlife sites. The Marshes are threatened by a planned commercial development by the London Borough of Havering, supported by English Partnerships (a Government Quango).
The announcement follows positive comments last month from Environment Minister,Michael Meacher, who said of Rainham Marshes [1] that “There can be no question of development taking place that could damage the SSSI”.
Matt Phillips, Senior Wildlife Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
“We are delighted that English Nature has re-stated its opposition to the destruction of this wonderful wildlife site. However, we are astonished that English Partnerships, a Government Quango, is still supporting this horrendous proposal, despite Michael Meacher's comments last month that Rainham Marsh mustn't be damaged.”
