Foe slams alliance and leicester's new energy wasting mortgage

22 September 1998

Friends of the Earth today slammed a new 'free energy mortgage' by the Alliance and Leicester as “irresponsible”. The scheme, which is being launched today in conjunction with London Electricity offers free gas and electricity for up to 3 years with their mortgages.

Anna Stanford, Energy Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
“This is an astonishingly irresponsible marketing ploy by the Alliance and Leicester. Climate change is a major threat to the well-being of the planet, and people all over the world are now looking for ways to reduce energy-use to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas. If the Alliance and Leicester cared about the environment they should follow the lead of the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society and encourage their customers to make their homes more energy efficient through special green mortgages, or award grants aimed at helping customers to take energy efficient measures around the home. This would help the fight against climate change and save money on fuel bills as well. The Alliance and Leicester should withdraw this wasteful special offer immediately.”

Friends of the Earth is promoting the Energy Efficiency Bill - a new law to require mortgage lenders to assess the energy efficiency of houses, and recommend cost-effective measures they should take, before they lend money.
