Government extends nuclear lifeline

Friends of the Earth today renewed its call for the Government to stop propping up British Energy with tax-payers money after ministers agreed to extend a £410 million emergency loan to the company. FOE also urged the Government to rule out the building of any new nuclear power stations.
Bryony Worthington, Nuclear campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said:
“The nuclear industry is out of economic control. It can only survive with massive subsidies from the public purse. Taxpayers are already committed to picking up a multi-billion pound bill for dealing with the highly radioactive waste the industry has created. The Government must not give any further subsidies to British Energy. It should also rule out the building of any more of these costly, dangerous and unpopular white elephants, and invest in renewables instead. “
