Commenting on Railtrack being placed into administration, Richard Dyer, Rail Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
Stephen Byers' intervention is a welcome start to sorting out the problems of the rail industry, but there is still much to do. The Government must now guarantee enough investment over the next 10 years to deliver a modern and efficient rail system that helps take traffic off the roads. That will almost certainly mean more public money - but the Government can make huge savings by not building so many new roads.
