Foe hits back at fsa over illegal GM ingredients

15 November 2000

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a press release following revelations from Friends of the Earth that unauthorised GM ingredients had been discovered in tortilla chips bought in a number of UK supermarkets. The FSA questions the “robustness of the analysis”carried out by a specialist laboratory in Germany and says that there is no health risk.

Responding, Adrian Bebb, GM campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:

We are extremely disappointed that the FSA has chosen to use the BSE approach:claim it's safe first, investigate the problem later. How can the FSA be so sure that small quantities of GM ingredients are safe when they haven't been authorised for sale in Europe? The presence of illegal GM ingredients at any level points to huge holes in the system to protect consumers. There must be a full criminal investigation.“
