Us forest proposal - a giant free gift
20 November 2000
The US proposal on forests and agricultural unveiled at today's press briefing (6pm) if granted would be still a giant free gift , amounting to perhaps half their Kyoto obligations every year.
The US suggests that up to 20megatonnes of carbon sequestrated by its forests every year should count in full towards its Kyoto target, without any further action being required at all. It would also get a credit of one third of all additional carbon sequestered by forests (about 100+ megatonnes a year), and full credit for agricultural land.
Commenting, FOE Climate Campaigner Roda Verheyen said:
This giant free gift demanded by the US would allow them to meet up to a half of their Kyoto target without any further action whatsoever. This would make a complete farce of the Kyoto agreement and should be rejected by other parties at the summit out of hand.
