Daffy claims "quackers" says foe

25 November 1998

Charles Secrett, Director of Friends of the Earth, has today dismissed accusations by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott that FOE is “a bit daffy on occasions” as “water off a duck's back”.

Charles Secrett said:
“We have simply pointed out that there are no Bills in the Queen's Speech to back up Labour's election promise to be the greenest Government ever. No Labour Queen's Speech or Budget has even tried to deliver on this pledge. Mr Prescott shouldn't shoot the messenger just because he doesn't like the message.

Of course the Deputy Prime Minister has done his best to champion the environment, and we publicly back him and his team. The problem lies with Mr Blair, Mr Mandelson and Mr Brown. Number 10, the Treasury and the DTI just don't seem to share Mr Prescott's enthusiasm for putting the environment at the heart of Government. We will be the first to cheer if and when they finally get the message”.
