Road-widening plans are environmental disaster
29 November 2001
Plans for major widening of some of Britain's motorways would be a disaster for the environment and the Government's green credentials Friends of the Earth warned today. According to a report in today's New Civil Engineer, Government-commissioned studies will recommend widening some motorways to up to 14 lanes.
Roger Higman, Senior Transport Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
If these proposals are accepted they would be a disaster for the environment and for the Government's green credentials. Widening motorways will only create more traffic, more pollution and, eventually, even more congestion. If the Government seriously wants to tackle congestion they must cut people's dependence on the car. This means investing heavily in public transport.
