Anger over mox start-up
20 December 2001
Friends of the Earth reacted angrily to news that plutonium has been introduced to the mixed oxide (MOX) plant at Sellafield today.
The start-up of the controversial plant will:
- lead to huge clean-up costs for the taxpayer;
- increase pollution;
- threaten the safety of people, not just in the surrounding area, but also in neighbouring countries too;
- heighten the risk of highly radioactive materials ending up in the hands of terrorists.
Charles Secrett, Director of Friends of the Earth, said:
The UK Government wants to be at the heart of Europe. But allowing MOX to go ahead will simply anger our neighbours and threaten their and our security. Mox is a political,economic and environmental nightmare. The plant,and its radioactive shipments, are a prime terrorist target. We call on the Government and BNFL, even at this late stage, to think again and stop the commissioning of this dangerous plutonium plant before it's too late.
