Venezuela: more catastrophes inevitable

Reacting to the widespread devastation and tens of thousands of fatalities in Venezuela,the group warned that extreme weather events will be much more likely in the next century and beyond unless the world begins to tackle the causes of climate change.
Friends of the Earth's Policy & Campaigns Director, Tony Juniper said:
“The tragedy of thousands of deaths in Venezuela stands to be repeated many times over in the next century. It may already be too late to prevent severe climate disruption. However Western governments can and must take bold steps to cuts emissions of 'greenhouse gases'. The longer serious action is delayed,the worse matters are likely to become.
“It is essential that the international agreements to help protect the Earth's climate are fully ratified as soon as possible and that deeper cuts in greenhouse gases are urgently agreed.
“The UK too must maintain its important leadership role. By sticking to its ambitious CO2 reduction target - twenty per cent over ten years - it can show the world what needs to be done.”
