FOE beams giant three-screen cine protest at motor industry banqueteers
18 January 1996
Friends of the Earth will today welcome guests to the motor industry's 100th birthday party, in Birmingham, by beaming a giant three-screen, computer-designed cine projection at them as they arrive [1].
The 32 second, "continuous loop" projection will graphically illustrate the damage done by the car to the environment and society over the last 100 years. Designed with students at St Martin's School of Art in London, it juxtaposes images of traffic jams, accidents and pollution with messages wishing the industry a happy birthday, and urging people to use cars less.
Roger Higman, Senior Transport Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
"100 years of the motor car have brought 100 years of pollution, 100 years of road deaths and massive destruction of the countryside. No one is suggesting we should get rid of cars, but we must find ways of using them less."
Friends of the Earth today launched its Cars Cost the Earth! campaign which aims to encourage people to give up using their cars for two days each week.
