Newbury: work stopped for the third day running

11 January 1996

Third Battle of Newbury: Day 3

PROTESTERS STOP WORK FOR THIRD DAY RUNNING

For the third day running work on the Newbury Bypass has been halted by protesters. Earlier today constructors moved in to the grounds of the Mary Hare School, on the northern section of the proposed route, but only manage to carry out minimal clearance work before work was once again abandoned following peaceful protest.

Susan Millington of Newbury FOE said

"We have taken immense heart from the extraordinary success of the campaign so far and we are fully prepared for a long period of peaceful protest action. This road is not the answer to Newbury's traffic problems - the money wasted would be far better spent on cheaper and more effective proposals such as traffic management in the town itself"

Friends of the Earth will also be concentrating on building awareness of the issues and correcting some off the distortions being put about by advocates of the road.

Some popular misconceptions:

That practically all Newbury residents want the bypass to be built;

That the Public Enquiry was democratic and therefore offered the best solution for Newbury's transport problems;

That through' traffic is the major traffic problem in Newbury;

That air quality will definitely improve for the residents of Newbury if the bypass is built.
