Newbury: Hundreds of residents replant route
14 January 1996
Local Newbury residents today planted over 100 new trees to replace those destroyed by contractors working on the Newbury bypass. A number of felled' trees were also replanted. Between two and three hundred local residents attended the planting, which took place at Tot Hill, at the southern section of the proposed bypass, where clearence work first started on Wednesday [1].
Andrew Wood, of Newbury Friends of the Earth said: "Today's turnout demonstrates the strength of local opposition to this futile and destructive road scheme. The Government should cut the traffic not the trees."

Notes
