Clergy hold special service on Newbury Bypass route
7 February 1996
At 11.00 am on Friday 9th February, five Vicars, led by the Reverend Peter Owen-Jones [1], will conduct a special service to highlight the spiritual loss that will result from the unnecessary destruction of the countryside, being caused by work on the controversial Newbury bypass.
The service will last approximately 15-20 minutes and will be held where clearance work is being carried out on that day. Further information can be obtained from a recorded message on 020 7566 1698. This will be updated on Friday morning to give the exact location of the service.
Members of the public are invited to attend the service.
The Reverend Peter Owen-Jones said:
"I am appalled by the callous way human beings continue to treat the environment. The systematic destruction of God's creation makes life so intolerable for those forced to live in its shadow."
Tony Juniper, Deputy Campaigns Director at Friends of the Earth said:
"This special service underlines a major failure in the way we look at proposed development projects. Meeting people's need for spritual well-being is one of the most important roles of our countryside but the officials and politicians who decided to build this road paid little heed to such matters in their narrow economic evaluation of its impacts."
