Transport Experts Blast Newbury Bypass Myths

7 February 1996

Press Conference: 2:30 PM. Friday 9 February 1996 The Waterside Centre, The Theatre, Northbrook St. (01635 41269) Chair: Jonathon Porritt.Speakers include: Stephen Joseph of Transport 2000; Keith Buchan, advisor to the Government on traffic forecasts; Adrian Foster-Fletcher of Businesses against the Bypass; Simon Festing of Friends of the Earth.

At a press conference at 2:30pm on Friday 9 February, transport experts will outline clear alternative solutions which could solve Newbury's traffic problems without a Western bypass. The conference, chaired by Jonathon Porritt, is organised by Friends of the Earth, backed by Businesses Against the Bypass, Transport 2000 and the Third Battle of Newbury.

There is strong agreement that a package of transport measures, if implemented now, could solve Newbury's traffic problems at a fraction of the cost of the bypass, and without the environmental destruction associated of the Western route.

Simon Festing, transport campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:

"The Newbury bypass saga has been largely portrayed as roads versus the environment'. Yet the bypass simply does not make sense in transport terms. Alternative solutions do exist which could be implemented at a fraction of the cost and with environmental benefits rather than destruction"
